Caisson Seawalls

Slip Form Construction

For making caissons, instead of removing external forms at each level, Singapore uses slip form construction implemented by Bygging-Uddemann of Sweden. With slip form construction, concrete forms slide upward in place to the next level of pouring concrete.

Each caisson is very large and takes one week to make. Two slip forms are used, producing two caissons at a time.

The photograph above shows a partially completed caisson on the left, with a completed caisson behind it. On the right, an already poured caisson floor with base walls is sliding into position to have the slip form make the rest of the caisson walls.

The following photograph shows progress in constructing caissons.

The slip form on the left is higher up, with more of the caisson walls having been poured. The base of the next caisson is in front, ready to slide in when the almost finished caisson is completed.

On the right, the slip form has completed lower levels of the caisson, with many more levels to go upward. Reinforcing rods are being tied for the floor of the next caisson in front.

Next, we look at the other side of this facility:

Caissons are held up with hydraulic jacks on steel rollers that slowly roll on steel rails to slide the caisson.
